Fundamental in Mediterranean cooking, tomatoes were not really accepted in Northern Europe until the 19th Century. They originated from western South America. Hernan Cortes the conqueror of the Aztecs sent the first tomato plants to Spain. Being part of the nightshade family, their leaves are toxic and can result in bad stomach aches. This may be why they were unpopular. Today however it is one of the most important ingredients in the kitchen. Excellent in salads, eaten raw, as an addition to stews and stir fries, and that old favourite tomato soup.
