Latin Name : Thymus from the family Labiatae. Thymus is a derivative of the Greek word ‘thymon’ which means courage, and in Roman times soldiers would bathe in thyme water to give them vigour
Native to the Mediterranean species of Thyme are found all over the world including Greenland and Western Asia.
It has been used in past times by the Egyptians for embalming, the Romans used it to purify their rooms, and in the Middle Ages, if drunk whilst performing certain rituals would enable one to see fairies!
These days it is more commonly known for its association with bouquet garni being the third of our herbs to contribute to this. Suits poultry, shellfish and game cooked slowly in wine.
