Latin Name : Eruca vesicaria subsp. sativa, also known as Rocquette from the family Cruciferae.
Native to the Mediterranean it is used widely in Italy and southern France and has found its way back to the herb gardens of Britain.
Cultivated continuously since Roman times there have been some interesting uses for it. Some suggest that it should be taken before a whipping to alleviate the pain and it was also used as protection from the bites of the shrewmouse and other venomous beasts! The leaves are superb in all forms of salads and can be added to sauces as well as vegetable dishes.
