These were native to South and central America and were discovered by Christopher Columbus. They were regarded with some awe and wonder as they were unlike anything seen before and became a symbol of hospitality. Particularly nutritious, rich in vitamins A, B and C, they also contain bromelain which is an enzyme that aids digestion. They are excellent cooked and go well with savoury dishes such as gammon, lamb and curries.
