Grown since prehistoric times wild pears are native to Europe and Asia. They became immensely popular in medieval Italy and in France in the seventeenth century. Today there are over 5,000 named varieties throughout the world. Another fruit which is a particularly good diuretic, they are good for pregnant women and convalescents. Best eaten raw or with a robust cheese such as Stilton or Gorgonzola, cooked pears are fantastic in savoury dishes especially with game birds and venison. They can be dried, canned made into chutney and poached.
