Mushrooms in the past have had strong links with the supernatural and even today have a mysterious side, with circles of mushrooms (fairy rings) appearing overnight in fields and woods. Many types of mushrooms are poisonous or hallucinogenic and the French will take their wild mushrooms to a local pharmacy for identification. Fry mushrooms in garlic butter for a delicious starter. They are a useful source of protein in a meat free diet and have stimluant properties which strengthen the immune system.
