Latin Name : mentha from the family Labiatae. The generic name is said to be taken from the Greek Minthe who was pursued by Hades, god of the underworld. His queen Persephone however understandably took umbrage at this and turned her in to the plant mint
Native to Europe, however is now found in many parts of the world including Japan, North America and Australia.
Has been cultivated since ancient times for its medicinal properties, makes an excellent refreshing tea and goes well with meat, fish & yoghurt and a particular favourite as always chocolate mint mousse.
