The melon is a member of a large family of fruits and vegetables which include amongst others cucumbers and marrows. They originated in Africa or Asia and have been known in China for as long as 3,000 years. Christopher Columbus introduced the fruit to the New World and they now grow in most warm parts of the world. Nutritionally they are high in water content so they are very low in calories. They are good for the digestive system. Best eaten raw and in salads and are a superb accompaniment with Parma Ham and salmon.
