Its exact origins are unknown, yet it has been cultivated in tropical Asia for over 3,000 years where it is used extensively in Asian cuisine. It didn't take long before it was introduced to the rest of the world, reaching us via Jamaica in the 16th Century. It goes well in curries, chutneys, stews, puddings and not forgetting gingerbread biscuits. Excellent for easing cold symptons and for nausea and morning sickness.
