Latin Name : Anethum graveolens. The generic name ‘Anethum’ is a derivative of the Greek ‘Anethon’. Dill is said to have come from the Anglo-Saxon ‘dylle’ or the Norse ‘dilla’ with means to soothe or lull
Native to southern Europe and western Asia. It also grows wild in North America and South America and in the Mediterranean.
Used by Egyptian doctors as far back as 5000 years ago. In the Middle ages it was an important ingredient for medicinal purposes, the treatment of headaches and coughs and in soothing infants. Dill water or gripe water obviously still in use today. It is also an excellent replacement to use if following a salt free diet.
