These were first mentioned of being cultivated in China in 5BC and are thought to have been used in India even further back in time. They are a member of the nightshade family and therefore related to potatoes, tomatoes and peppers. These days they are one of the most popular vegetables to be found in the Mediterranean. It is a low calorie vegetable particularly good for the digestive system and also calms the mind. Aubergines are mildly toxic and therefore must be cooked before eating. Is one of the main ingredients for moussaka.
